Eid al-Fitr 2008 Official Statement

Based on the moon sighting and astronomical calculations, Eid al-Fitr 1429 will be on Wednesday October 1st, 2008.

The astronomical calculations determined that the new astronomical moon, for the month of Shawal 1429, is on September 29th at 8:12 Universal Time (3:12 am Winnipeg, MB local time).

On Monday September 29th, it is impossible to see the moon because it sets before sunset. For example in Winnipeg, as well as in Calgary, the moon sets 19 min before sunset. And it sets 21 min before sunset in Victoria (BC).

Similarly the moon sets before sunset in other Muslim countries; the moon sets 6 min before sunset in Mecca, and 8 min before sunset in Riyadh. In Bagdad, Damascus, Beirut and Tunis the moon sets 12 min before sunset. The moon sets 11 min before sunset in Amman, Kuwait, al-Quds and Algeria. In Cairo and Tripoli the moon sets 10 min before sunset. And in Abu Dhabi, al-Manama and Rabat the moon sets 9 min before sunset.

On the basis of the above information and based on the criteria followed by the Manitoba Islamic Association (MIA), (sighting of the moon at maghrib time), MIA in consultation with Imam Shaikh Hosni is pleased to announce that, Tuesday September 30th, will be the 30th day of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 1429 will be on Wednesday, October 1st.

The Manitoba Islamic Association would like to take this opportunity to wish all Muslims a blessed Eid and we pray to Allah s.w.t. to accept our sawm (fast) and righteous deeds and to forgive our sins and shortcomings. Moreover, the MIA would like to remind our Muslim community to cooperate in righteousness and unite and avoid what may cause dispute and disunity.
