MIA Announces the 2014/2015 Scholarship Program

Details of the Program

Introduction
Through a gift from a generous donor, the MIA is able to offer Muslim students enrolled in institutions of higher learning a number of academic scholarships. If you wish to apply for this program, please review the eligibility information and application process provided below. If you wish to contribute financially to this program, please contact the MIA treasurer.

Eligibility
Manitoba students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled as full-time students in a post-secondary institution are eligible to apply.

Consideration
Students will be evaluated based on academic merit and level of volunteer work.

Application Process
Applications can be emailed to Reda.Elgazzar@miaonline.org or mailed to MIA Scholarship Program, 2445 Waverley St., Winnipeg, MB, R3Y 1S3.

A complete application must include:
1. 2014–2015 MIA Application Form (available at www.miaonline.org/scholarship).
2. Official transcripts (issued in last 3 months).
3. Proof of enrollment as a full-time student in a post-secondary institution in Manitoba.
4. Updated resume and cover letter describing academic record and volunteer work.
5. At least two reference letters describing the applicant’s character, academic achievement and volunteer contributions.

Applicants may be interviewed to provide further clarifications on their applications.

Value of Scholarship
The MIA will award scholarships to a maximum value of $1000 per student.

Deadline
Applications must be received by 5:00 pm, Friday, November 28, 2014.

Rules

1. Only Manitoba students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled as full-time students in a post-secondary institution are eligible to apply.

2. The scholarship program shall be announced in mosques, online and in the MIA newsletter.

3. Application forms will be available ONLY online.

4. Scholarships will be awarded to students entering post-secondary institutions from high school and students already in post-secondary institutions with the majority going to the latter category. The Selection committee has the discretion as to the number in each category.

5. A complete application consists of:
(a) 2014 –2015 MIA Application Form (available at ww.miaonline.org/scholarship).
(b) Official transcripts (issued in last 3 months).
(c) Proof of enrollment as a full-time student in a post-secondary institution in Manitoba.
(d) Updated resume and cover letter describing academic record and volunteer work.
(e) At least two reference letters describing the applicant’s character, academic achievement and volunteer contributions.

6. Applications must be received by 5:00 pm, Friday, November 28, 2014.

7. Applications will be assessed based on academic credentials (80%) and volunteer work (20%).

8. Immediate relatives of MIA elected members and scholarship selection committee members are ineligible for scholarships.

9. The selection committee may request to interview any or all of the applicants.

10. The scholarship committee will forward a list of successful applicants, by December 15th, 2014 to MIA executive council for approval and announcement on the MIA website, at Friday prayers, in the Manitoba Muslim and on MIA announcement board.

11. Scholarships sponsored by community members should be entitled with sponsors’ names or their designated names under the MIA.

12. The maximum scholarship amount is $1000 per student.
